What is Baptism?

What is Baptism?
VARIOUS VIEWS
Some people consider baptism to be only a ceremony. Others speak of various modes of baptism. Others believe it to be important, but not necessary in order to be saved. The Bible is very specific about the design and purpose of baptism.

BAPTISM IS IMMERSION
The Bible clearly shows immersion to be the practice during Bible times. John the Baptist was baptizing in Aenon near Salim because there was "much water there." (John 3:23). Sprinkling does not require "much water."

An evangelist named Philip went down into the water and baptized an Ethiopian who had heard Philip preach Jesus (Acts 8:38). Why would either, or both, have gone into the water if sprinkling, or some other "mode", had been practiced?

APPROPRIATE SYMBOL
Immersion is the only action to appropriately symbolize the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is used in this manner "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:3-4). See also Colossians 2:12. A symbol is a symbol because it suggests a likeness. Would the burial of Christ be best symbolized by sprinkling water on the head or by immersion of the whole body into water?

LEXICONS DEFINE BAPTISM
Any standard Greek lexicon will show the meaning of the word to be "immersion ." Thayer defines baptism as " ... immersion, commanded by Christ, by which men are born again by the Holy Spirit into a new life, come into the fellowship of Christ and the church (1 Corinthians 12:13), and are made partakes of eternal salvation ..."1

Baptism is a transliteration.
The English translators simply put corresponding English letters beside the Greek word to create the word "baptism." The proper translation of the Greek word is "immersion."

RELIGIOUS LEADERS AGREE
John Calvin. Reformation leader, wrote, " ... it is evident that the term 'baptize' means to immerse, and that this the form used by the primitive church."2
Martin Luther, Reformer, wrote, " ... the baptized should be totally immersed, according to the meaning of the word ..."3
John Wesley, founder of Methodism, commented on Romans 6:4, "We are buried with Him --- Alluding to the ancient manner of baptism by immersion."4

SPRINKLING A SUBSTITUTION
Immersion was universally practiced in the first century. But sprinkling was substituted with increased frequency until, in 1311 AD, the Council of Ravenna declared sprinkling to be the official baptism of Roman Catholicism. Many religious groups have followed this practice even though it is a departure from Christ's instruction. Unless we have been immersed for the forgiveness of our sins, we have not obeyed His instructions.

OBEY CHRIST
If we accept Jesus as lord, we will want to do precisely what He instructed. We will be immersed in water. Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19). Peter said, "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized ... and he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ." (Acts 10:47-48)

A NEW BEGINNING
The joy of the Ethiopian (Acts 8) at the point of baptism is the joy to be experienced by each disciple. A newness of life begins with baptism (Romans 6:4).
Saul of Tarsus was told, " ... Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name." (Acts 22:16). Sin is forgiven at the point of obedience in baptism (Acts 2:38). There is joy in the knowledge that sin is forgiven.

IMMERSED INTO CHRIST
There is forgiveness only in Christ. His blood shed on the cross made possible the forgiveness of our sins. Even though we may believe Him to be the Son of God, we are still in sin if we remain outside of Christ. The Bible says "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27). If we can be saved without baptism, we can be saved outside of Christ. We are baptized into Christ. If you have not been immersed into Christ for the remission (forgiveness) of your sins in the name (authority) of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, we urge you to do so today without delay. We would be happy to assist you, now.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You can accept the authority of Christ by doing what He commanded (Matthew 7:21; John 14:15; 15:10-14; Luke 6:46). Notice the pattern for becoming a Christian as revealed in the Scriptures. The Gospel was heard, resulting in faith (Romans 10:17). Repentance of (turning away from) sin (Acts 17:30) and confession of Jesus as the Son of God followed (Romans 10:10). Believers were baptized INTO Christ for the remission (forgiveness) of sins (See Matthew 28:18-20;Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 8:35-39; 22:16; Romans 6:3-5; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:20-21), and added to His church (Acts 2:47). Christians were taught to be faithful even to the point of death (Revelation 2:10).

Baptism and Forgiveness

Baptism and Forgiveness
by Robert L. Schales

Baptism is Necessary
The Bible presents this requirement very clearly. Jesus said, “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned” (Mark 16:16). If we accept Jesus as Lord we will gladly follow His instructions. There are many who, motivated by allegiance to human systems of thought, do not hesitate to rewrite this statement of Jesus. Jesus did not say, “He who believes is saved already, and let him be baptized because he is saved.” One who believes will be baptized as Jesus instructed. One who disbelieves will not follow the Lord’s instruction.

Jesus told His disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20).

Saved When Baptized
The apostle Paul was not saved on the road to Damascus. He was told to, “rise, and enter the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.” (Acts 9:6). Ananias was sent to him with the message, “Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the His name.” (Acts 22:16). If Paul was forgiven when he acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God, why did Ananias tell him, “... be baptized and wash away your sins”?

Peter, speaking of Noah’s obedient faith, wrote, “And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you --- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience --- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21). We receive God’s free gift of salvation through faith just as Noah was saved through obedient faith.

For Forgiveness
In Jerusalem the apostles presented evidence for Jesus as the Christ. Those who heard said, “... what shall we do?” They were told, “Repent, and let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Chris for the forgiveness of sins ...” (Acts 2:37-38). At the point of repentance toward God (changing the mind about sin). and acceptance of Jesus as Savior, one should be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. The word translated “for” means “in order to obtain” the forgiveness of sins.

It has been argued that the command to be baptized was given to people who were already saved. If so, then the command to repent was given to those who were saved. Of what were they to repent if they had already received forgiveness for sin? Both repentance and baptism, together, lead to the forgiveness of sins.

Baptized Into Christ
The finest winter coat would be of no value against the cold if it were not put on. In a similar way, unless Christ is “put on in baptism” there is no forgiveness for sin. “For you are all the sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.” (Galatians 3:26-27). Baptism is necessary in order to be IN Christ and have the redemption made possible by His sacrifice. Have you “Put on Christ” in baptism?

Baptism, a symbol of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection, expresses our hope for a resurrection like His. “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Jesus Christ have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we to might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection” (Romans 6:3-5) Have you been united with Christ?

The Response: Baptism
Philip, an evangelist, preached in Samaria. Here is the response: “But when they believed Philip preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike” (Acts 8:12). Philip preached Jesus to a man from Ethiopia. The man responded with this question, “Look, water! What prevents me from being baptized?” They both went down into the water and Philip baptized him. (See Acts 8:35-38).

The apostle Peter commanded Cornelius and his household to be baptized (Acts 10:48). The jailer at Philippi was baptized immediately upon hearing the word of the Lord spoken by Paul and Silas (Acts 16:29-33). The response was the same at Corinth, “... many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized” (Acts 18:8). If you accept Jesus as Lord, should not your response be the same today?

If you have not been baptized (immersed in water) for the forgiveness of sins in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you should do so today with the understanding that you are being baptized into Christ for the remission/forgiveness of your sins. Then, you should plan to assemble for worship with other Christians in order that you may continue to grow in the grace and knowledge in your new life in Christ.

Have you been Born Again?

Have you been Born Again?
It is Necessary?
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night, and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no man can do these signs that You do, unless God is with him.

Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’

Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born again when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?

Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:1-5). It is absolutely necessary to be born again in order to be pleasing to God.

Misconceptions
The new birth is not reform. We may need to reform our lives, but reform is like polishing a watch that does not run. It may need to be polished, but polish will not correct what is internally amiss.

The new birth is not simply becoming religious. Nicodemus was religious, but he needed to be “born again”.

The new birth is not simple a change of heart. God wants us to have a change of heart. This change of heart is repentance and God does command all to repent (Acts 17:30). But the new birth is not repentance.

The new birth is not being overwhelmed by the Spirit. Each individual has the capacity to accept or reject God’s message. Even Paul, who was chosen as a special messenger to the Gentiles, could have rejected God’s purpose for him. He said to Agrippa, “I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19). He was obedient; he could have been disobedient. The choice was his. But Paul chose to obey God.

Obedience to the Truth
In order to be born again there must be an appreciation of God’s grace in sending His Son to die for our sins. In the realization that we are not good enough to commend ourselves to God, we thank Him for the gift of His Son, realizing that through Him we can have forgiveness for sin. The new birth is through faith in Christ, accepting Him as Lord and Savior.

Those having faith in Jesus Christ will obey Him. “Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding Word of God.” (1 Peter 1:22-23)

The Spirit and the New Birth
The special work of the Holy Spirit is in the realm of revealing and confirming God’s message. Jesus promised His disciples the Holy Spirit to, “guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). This truth is to be heard and obeyed with the understanding that we can have forgiveness of sin through Christ, who has made atonement for us. The Spirit has revealed what we are to do --- the truths to be obeyed. “And this is the Word which was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25).

Obedience From the Heart
Sincere, heartfelt obedience is necessary. “But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching ...” (Romans 6:17). These believers in Rome had obeyed from the heart and at the point of baptism they were freed from sin (Romans 6:3-4). Note. This spiritual new birth, or “newness of life” begins at the point of baptism!

Water and Spirit
Jesus commanded baptism in water (Matthew 28:19-20). Those who were baptized had been convicted of sin by the revealed truths of the Spirit (John 16:8-11). The new birth is a baptism in water with sincere obedience from the heart to the convicting message of the Spirit. It is being born of water and the Spirit (See Acts 2:38).

Examples of Conversion
The book of Acts should be studied, paying special attention to the examples of conversion. In chapter eight we may read of a man who was riding along in his chariot. He was asked by Philip, the evangelist, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man invited Philip to join him, and as they rode along together Philip preached Jesus to him. When they came to some water the man said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” Notice the desire to be baptized in response to the convicting message of the Spirit. Philip baptized him and the man went on his way rejoicing. He was born again!

Have You Been Born Again
According to the Bible Pattern?
Have you, in response to the message of the Spirit, repented toward God, confessed your sin, and with faith in Jesus Christ, been baptized in obedience for the forgiveness of your sins, to the truth of the Bible? Have you truly been born again?
